1. Discuss the monarchy's relationship with the University during the Civil War. Which college did Charles I make his headquarters? In what ways did the students and the foundations of the various colleges contribute to the Royalist cause? How did the Royalist surrender in 1646 affect the University?
2. Choose one of the Oxford Colleges (e.g., Christ Church) and discuss its historic relationship with the monarchy. What rulers were associated with the College and what was the nature of their association?
3. Because of the wealth and
power of the University, monarchs often tried to influence its policies
and personnel. Discuss, giving two examples from the history of the
University. In particular, you may want to look at periods of controversy
such as the Reformation, Civil War, Exclusion Crisis, and Restoration.
